Health Benefits, Legality and Safety of Cannabidiol (CBD)
Youve likely heard a lot about cannabidiol (CBD) in media and probably even found it on your favorite coffee shops menu. What exactly is CBD though and why are people talking about it this much?
Cannabidiol and Marijuana
First, CBD is the second most predominant active ingredient contained by marijuana, which is also called by its scientific name, cannabis. Although CBD is a basic component of medical marijuana, it is obtained straight from the hemp plant, a relative of the marijuana plant. Cannabidiol is among the hundreds of compounds found in marijuana, but alone, it does not produce mind-altering effects, which simply means you dont get a high from it.
In all 50 states, there are laws that legalize CBD with different levels of restriction, and though the federal government still classifies the compound together with marijuana, it isnt exactly relentless in enforcing against it. In fact, the government can be pretty confusing when it comes to its stand against CBD, but part of it depends on whether the compound was hemp-derived or marijuana-derived.
CBD is known worldwide for its various health benefits, but in terms of scientifically backed claims, nothing is stronger than the connection established between CBD and childhood epilepsy syndromes – for example, Dravet syndrome – which are not responsive to traditional treatment. In so many studies, CBD was found to bring down the number of seizures and sometimes even stop them altogether. There are even tons of videos online showing CBD at work on children having actual epileptic attacks. The FDA has approved at least one cannabis-derived medicine for the said conditions, and this drug contains CBD as the active ingredient.
Aside from its anti-epilepsy properties, CBD is also known to resolve anxiety issues as well as insomnia.
As well, CBD is touted for its ability to treat various types of chronic pain. In a study published in the European Journal of Pain, It was shown that CBD applied on the skin can help reduce arthritic pain and inflammation. In more studies, CBD proved its ability to stop neuropathic and inflammatory pain, both of which are notorious for being the the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat.
The biggest safety issue concerning CBD is the fact that you will probably find it being sold as a health supplement rather than a drug or medicine. Because the FDA doesnt regulate dietary supplements, it can be difficult to determine whether a product actually has the ingredients printed on its label, or if it is free of contaminants. For this reason, you need to be very, very careful when buying CBD supplements. Spend time scanning online reviews but stick to third-party consumer websites for more credibility.
